I have traveled along the Midlands Meander multiple times over the years, and every time I am in awe at how beautiful it is. This latest time, just a few days ago, it was wonderful seeing all the autumn leaves too.
There are so many things to do in the Midlands Meander that even after years of exploring its winding country roads, forests, and charming shops, it still surprises me.
The rolling green hills dotted with horses and cattle, fresh farm produce, art, forests, and wonderful meals. It’s the kind of beauty that makes you stop the car, take a deep breath, and remind yourself how lucky you are to be here.
If you’ve ever longed for a place that combines cozy countryside charm with authentic experiences and a touch of luxury—the Midlands Meander is it.
Where Is the Midlands Meander?
The Midlands Meander is a scenic arts and culture route running between Hilton and Mooi River in KwaZulu-Natal. It’s made up of several interconnected routes through farmlands, forests, and picturesque villages, with more than 150 places to visit.
It’s ideal for day-trippers, weekenders, couples, and families— for anyone who craves a bit of quiet, beauty, art, and inspiration.
Even if you only have a day, you can still jam in quite a lot, but I always recommend slowing down, taking your time, and spending at least a night or two. See here for a list of accomodation options.
Art in the Country – Harrington House, Hilton
I loved seeing all the wonderful art at Art in the Country this year. It was held at Harrington House, along the Hilton College Road.
The annual Art in the Country, which features over 60 artists showcasing everything from oil paintings to sculpture over four days, is a stunning venue surrounded by gardens.
It really is a great outing if you are an art lover.
Howick Falls – A Majestic Stop
The impressive Howick Falls is always a good stop, as it’s so easily accessible from the main road through Howick. It is the second highest waterfall in South Africa at approx 95 m in height (310 feet).
There’s a well-maintained viewing platform and a little craft market nearby.

Yellowwood Cafe
Not far from Howick Falls is the always-welcoming Yellowwood Café, one of my favorite places for a lovely breakfast or lunch.
The food is homely and delicious but what makes this spot especially memorable is the two miniature donkeys who live on the property.
It is a beautiful setting with a large jungle gym area for the children too.
Nelson Mandela Capture Site – Powerful and Peaceful
The Nelson Mandela Capture Site is deeply moving and a must-see. The towering sculpture of Madiba’s face—made up of 50 steel columns that align perfectly as you walk toward it—is nothing short of powerful.
The on-site museum tells the story of Mandela’s arrest and is well worth taking the time to walk through.
Thabo’s Antiques
Just a short drive from Howick along the Midmar Road lies Thabo’s Antiques, a true hidden gem. It’s part antique store, part curiosity cabinet, and part memory lane.
Piggly Wiggly – A Little Bit of Everything
Piggly Wiggly in the Lions River area is one of the most popular and vibrant stops on the Midlands Meander. And for good reason—there’s something for everyone here.
It is a wonderful stop for children as it has a farm and reptile park, candle dipping, ceramic painting, putt-putt, zipline and climbing wall, and for the little ones a miniature train ride. For the adults there are shops selling candles, soaps, wine, cheeses, a chocolate shop and delicious meals!
St Ives Lodge – Wildlife on Your Doorstep
Almost opposite is St Ives Lodge and Venue, offering both accommodation and day visitor access. The setting is picture-perfect—green lawns, a glistening dam, and lovely walking paths.
The best part? zebra and antelope roam freely on the property. You can sit on the deck with a glass of wine and watch a dazzle of zebra wander past. The lodge’s dam is home to Egyptian geese and other water birds.
Rawdons Hotel – Cosy Ale and English Charm
Near the quaint village of Nottingham Road, Rawdons Hotel is like stepping into a Cotswold postcard. The Brewery and Pub on site offers fantastic local craft beer.
Brahman Hills – Pampering with a View
Brahman Hills offers a luxury retreat with top-notch spa facilities and stunning views.
It’s also home to a private game reserve. Guests can spot eland, zebra, wildebeest, and impala. The lodge is serene, with wonderful walks from the beautiful gardens, bubbling fountains, and cozy fireplaces.
