Simons Town
I had heard about the African Penguins at Simons Town but it took many years until I got there. It was so worth it. So on our 25th Wedding Anniversary my husband Colin and I celebrated with an early morning visit to the beautiful penguins on Boulders Beach.
Accommodation
There is a variety of accommodation in Simons town. We usually use booking.com as they are trustworthy and have great cancellation terms if you need them.
We had stayed the night before at the wonderful Whale Song which is right above Boulders Beach, so we could just walk down the hill to see them.
Whale Song can sleep 8 guests in 4 bedrooms and it has 3 bathrooms. It has fantastic views across False Bay.
Penguins
This is definitely a bucket list item to visit the penguins in Cape Town. We spent a morning with them at Boulders Beach where they have been nesting since 1983.
Penguins are very comical, I just love the way they move on land and compared to how at home they are in the water.
These African Penguins have chosen to nest at Boulders Beach and it is lovely to spend time observing them in their natural habitat. You can walk along the wooden boardwalk at Foxys Beach to see the penguins up close too.
Summer is the best time to see the penguins at Boulders Beach and they are the most acive in the early morning or late evening. The Boulders Beach entry fee is R176 (+-$9) per adult for internationals and R44 for South African adult, R22 per child for the day.
Simon's Town is only 35km away from Cape Town and home to the largest navy base in South Africa. Visitors can visit the Simon's Town Heritage Museum and the Naval Museum.
Attractions
There are lots of things to do and see in Simon's Town as well as having lots of restaurants and shops to visit. You can also have the chance to spot calving whales from June to November.
There is an option to take a 2 hour kayak tour around Simons Town to visit the penguins from a different aspect.
Truly one of the best wildlife experiences in the world to do if you love penguins.
